Governor Dennis Daugaard is asking South Dakota legislators to extend a law set to expire this summer that governs the use of lakes on private land for recreation. Lawmakers during a special legislative session last year approved a compromise on so-called non-meandered waters that sunsets in June 2018, meaning lawmakers will have to revisit the issue in the upcoming session. The governor’s office proposed a bill last week that would move the law’s expiration date to 2021. State Representative Jason McCleery of Sisseton offers his thoughts on the non-meandered waters issue as lawmakers prepare to begin the 2018 legislative session this week…

Jason says the proper means for dealing with the use of non-meandered waters for recreational purposes has been on ongoing issue in recent years and he further states that he’s very much looking forward to extending the law from its current status..

The 2018 South Dakota legislative session begins this Tuesday, January 9th and runs through March 26th.
