A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday in Codington County Circuit Court for a Watertown man charged with killing his roommate earlier this month.

Thirty-year-old Donald Herron appeared in court this (Tuesday) morning via closed circuit television, at which time he pleaded not guilty to charges of Second Degree Murder and First Degree Manslaughter.

Herron is accused of shooting his roommate, 30-year-old Seth Murray in the head with a handgun during the early morning of January 12th.

Police says alcohol may have been a factor in the shooting, and that Herron may have been playing around with the handgun when it accidentally discharged.

Herron was initially charged with First Degree Manslaughter and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.
He was later indicted on the Second Degree Murder charge by a Codington County Grand Jury.

A trial date has not yet been set.
