Officials in Grant County are continuing efforts to improve economic development opportunities on a county-wide scale with an overall goal of growing the county’s general population base for the immediate and distant future.

At this week’s Grant County Commissioners meeting, Bobbie Bohlen, Executive Director for Grant County Development Corporation informed the board of the latest developments taking place county-wide from an economic development perspective over the past month. She noted local officials are still analyzing the results from the recent Milbank “What Matters Most” survey which was developed and circulated to more than 750 people with varying ties to the Milbank community with the intent of more accurately building the Milbank Index for the immediate and distant future.

In a somewhat related matter, Todd Kays, Executive Director for the South Dakota First District of Local Governments organization provided the commission with a general overview of the different types of services which the agency provides to counties and community governmental agencies within the district to help spur local business growth. He also gave a general overview of the different types of services which the agency provided to Grant County during the past year, as well as those that are currently in place at this time. The agency is currently responsible for maintaining the city of Milbank’s geographic information system and the Grant County 9-1-1 database system. The agency is also currently working to establish new geographic information systems for the communities of Big Stone City and Revillo in the near future.

In other business, Grant County Weed Commissioner Nathan Mueller met with the board to discuss the need for continuing the contracts that are currently in place with different townships throughout the county for roadside weed control. The board approved continuing with the contacts that are currently in place with a slight cost increase to be assessed to the townships to maintain the service.
