Many people throughout northeastern South Dakota and western Minnesota are digging out today (Tuesday) from a major winter storm dumped as much as a foot of snow or more across parts of the regional area. Ryan Lueck, a forecaster with the National Weather Service Office in Aberdeen says all of the right ingredients came together ahead of time for a major snow event to occur to start off the week…

Although Mother Nature has been somewhat reluctant to release its powerful fury impacting the upper Midwest, Ryan says things in general, though, should begin to improve as we move through today (Tuesday) and into the latter part of the week…

As we move forward toward the end of the week things should definitely begin to improve from an overall weather perspective as Ryan explains…

According to the National Weather Service Office in Aberdeen, the Milbank area had officially recorded a foot of new snow over a 48 hour period ending this (Tuesday) morning. Elsewhere, 15 inches of snow was reported south of Twin Brooks; Gary received 14 inches; Wilmot 13.5 inches; LaBolt had 12.5 inches; Clear Lake 12.2 inches and Sisseton had 10.6 inches of new snow over the same time period. The latest winter storm system serves as a reminder that oftentimes our heaviest snows tend to occur as we get closer to spring when temperatures tend to gradually increase, which adds more moisture to any snowfall we may receive.
