The Milbank Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a variance request on behalf of 15 Hotel Group, which is proposing to build a new GrandStay Hotel in the south part of Milbank.
The variance was approved prior to the start of last (Monday) night’s Milbank City Council meeting, contingent on the hotel group breaking ground for the new structure in early April. The variance was requested because the height of the proposed structure initially did not adequately comply with current standards set forth under the city of Milbank’s zoning ordinance. The hotel group is proposing to build the new GrandStay hotel near the intersection of Highway 15 and West 10th Avenue on the south edge of Milbank.

At last (Monday) night’s council meeting, council members formally approved the receipt of $10,000 from the Grant County Commission for the repair of a Milbank Fire Department pumper truck, as recommended.

The council also approved to receive bids for the second phase of the Viola Street reconstruction project, which will extend from 7th Avenue to 10th Avenue. The project will take place this summer.

In a related matter, the council voted to convert the intersection of Railway Avenue and 6th Street near St. Lawrence Church into a four-way stop intersection.

The council also approved the hiring of Ryan Bakeberg as a new police officer for the city, effective April 2nd.
