Fires Damage Garage, Apartment Building in Watertown

Watertown Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to two separate blazes during the day on Monday.

The first call came in just after 12:30 p.m. at a home located at 403 Herzog Drive.

Investigators say the homeowner, Dan Boone, was working on a snowmobile inside an attached two-stall garage when a fire broke out, causing the garage and its contents to be completely destroyed.

Fire crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the house, although the inside of the home did sustain moderate smoke damage.

Watertown Fire Rescue crews were also called to an apartment fire just after 3:30 p.m. at 600 1/2 South Maple Street.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the roof and roof vents.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the interior fire before it could spread into an adjacent apartment in the other half of the building.

No one was injured, but officials say a dog did not survive the fire.

The apartment where the fire occurred sustained major structural damage.

The other apartment sustained smoke damage with a cat being rescued from that apartment.

Both apartments were unoccupied at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews remained on the scene for a little more than an hour.
