A Mobridge man escaped injury last (Tuesday) evening after driving his car into the Big Sioux River north of Watertown.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., the Codington County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a person who indicated that a car had entered the river about two miles north of the Lake Kampeska recreational area.

A short time later, search and rescue crews arrived on the scene to help pull the man to safety.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver, 21-year-old Skyler Meyer, was traveling eastbound on 166th Street while using a global positioning system as a sort of road map to guide his journey.
However, while doing so, he drove over the spillway with his vehicle eventually coming to rest in the river.

The water was relatively shallow where the car initially went through, but the vehicle continued on into deeper water, requiring Meyer’s rescue.

Meyer was not injured, and is not facing any charges.
