2018 Primary-City Council Election Results Complete in South Dakota

Registered voters throughout South Dakota went to the polls yesterday (Tuesday) to elect candidates to serve on state and local governing boards. On the non-political ballot, residents in Milbank’s Third Ward elected challenger Evan Grong over Incumbent Lane Lindquist by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent. Elsewhere in Grant County, registered republicans in the towns of Revillo and Albee or the townships of Adams and Vernon went to the polls to fill a precinct committeeman position with Dave Schultz coming out on top over Vincent Meyer by a margin of 65 percent to 35 percent.

Elsewhere, in Codington County there was a contested sheriff’s race between Republican Incumbent Brad Howell and challenger Chad Stahl with Howell receiving 2,686 votes while Stahl recorded 1,286 votes. Also in Codington County, there were two openings on the county board of commissioners with Republican Incumbent Donald Gabel winning in District 1 while Republican Incumbent L. Myron Johnson claimed the District 3 commission seat.

In Deuel County, there was a contested auditor’s race between republicans Mary Korth and Leah Ruby with Korth receiving 430 votes compared to 155 votes for Ruby. There was also a contested sheriff’s race with republican challenger Corg Borg defeating the Incumbent, David Solem by a margin of 396 to 272. Elsewhere in Deuel County, it was Republican Roger Kreutner winning the District 1 Commissioners seat, with Republican Gary DeJong winning in Commission District 5.

In Roberts County, there was a contested sheriff’s race between republicans Korey Ware and Tim Farmen with Ware coming out on top by a margin of 542 to 226.

In races of statewide interest, it was Kristi Noem winning the republican nomination for the office of Governor of South Dakota over Marty Jackley while Dusty Johnson claimed the republican nomination to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives over challengers Shantel Krebs and Neal Tapio.

In other races of key interest, in State Senate District 1 it was Susan Wismer of Britton winning easily over democratic challengers Thomas Bisek and Allison Renville while Incumbent House District 1 representative Steven McCleerey of Sisseton outdistanced democratic challengers H. Paul Dennert and Robert Whitmyre. Also in State Senate District 5, it was Lee Schoenbeck of Watertown winning handily over republican challenger Byron Callies.

Registered voters yesterday (Tuesday) also approved constitutional amendment Y, which will allow for certain changes to be made to Marsy’s Law, which was approved by voters in 2016.

The winners in yesterday’s (Tuesday’s) primary elections will advance to the general election to be held on November 6th.
