The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a three vehicle collision in Sisseton earlier this week in which one person suffered life-threatening injuries.

Tony Mangan, Public Information Officer for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the accident occurred late Monday afternoon at the intersection of state Highway 10 and Second Avenue West.

According to investigators, a westbound SUV driven by a 59-year-old man was in the inside lane of Highway 10 when he attempted to make a left-hand turn into a nearby parking lot, at which time he collided with an eastbound car driven by a 23-year-old woman.

The impact caused the SUV to flip over onto the driver’s side, at which time it came in contact with a third vehicle driven by a 44-year-old man, which was waiting to enter the highway.

A 61-year-old male passenger in the SUV was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life threatening injuries.

The drivers of the SUV and the car were both taken to Coteau Des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton where they were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
