Areas of Northeastern South Dakota Continue to Deal With Flooding From Late Season Snow Events

Some areas of northeastern South Dakota are still being impacted by flooding caused by snow melt from late season snow events.

Areas that lie along U.S. Highway 212 are dealing with some of the highest flood levels they’ve seen in several years.

In Codington County, emergency management officials say the water level at Lake Kampeska in Watertown is currently more than 30 inches higher than normal. They say the situation should gradually begin to improve, though, providing the area does not receive any significant rainfall in the near future.

To the east in Deuel County, several roads are currently under water and could remain that way for several weeks according to emergency management officials there. High waters have made it extremely difficult for farmers and ranchers to get into their fields to begin spring planting and to provide hay for their cattle. The county highway superintendent says there are certain areas where culverts have either been damaged or washed out, as well, due to extreme flooding.

Local officials are hoping to apply for special funding through the federal emergency management agency to help with floor repair costs.
