A judge has denied a request that the amount of bond for a Watertown man charged with murder be reduced due to the circumstances surrounding the case.

Thirty-eight-year-old Jeremy Steinberg appeared in Codington County Circuit Court this (Monday) morning via closed circuit television.

Steinberg is charged with Second Degree Murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Kristopher Spotts at a Watertown residence on April 9th.

Steinberg’s attorney requested that bond be lowered, noting Steinberg has family and friends in the area and is not a flight risk.

Codington County State’s Attorney Becky Reeves, though, indicated Steinberg has an extensive criminal background and is at high risk to re-offend if he’s released.

Judge Carmen Means denied the request with bond remaining at $750,000 cash.

The case is tentatively set to go to trial on October 1st.
